Let’s Get Honest About Laundry

You may have noticed I’ve been on a laundry kick lately. Good thing Miss E thinks it’s a fun activity because we’ve been doing a lot of it! On Monday we celebrated Earth Day and it got me thinking about different products I use on our home and how I can make the switch to more eco-friendly options, including in my laundry room.

I’ve always used natural detergent since Miss E is allergic to most store brands, but I have always struggled with how to fight stains without using chemicals and bleach. So in honor of Earth Day/Week I’ve decided to try The Honest Company’s non-toxic laundry supplies and fight those stains naturally.

My biggest struggle has been getting the stains out of my bright whites without using bleach, so I decided to try out the Honest Stain Remover and Honest Oxy Boost that acts like bleach but without the harmful chemicals. And of course, I can always use a natural detergent too.

It turns out, I’m not the only mom who has had these thoughts. The Honest Company was founded  by celebrity Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan who, like many modern parents, were increasingly worried about products made with questionable chemical ingredients. It was out of this concern that they created The Honest Company to ensure that parents (or anyone for that matter!) could easily find natural and non-toxic eco-friendly products that are beautiful, effective, and affordable.

When washing my bright whites I focused on the Oxy Boost, a stain fighter with naturally-derived ingredients that use oxygen for attacking & breaking down stains, grease, and dirt. I’m going to take their word for it. Considering I have a toddler and a large dog, I can use all the help I can get in this area with all of the food spills, mud splatters and craft accidents.

When washing my whites, I dissolved one of the Oxy tablets in the water and then added the Honest laundry detergent. I won’t lie, I was really skeptical at first, but I have to admit that I think this combo worked better than using straight bleach. I found that the clothes felt and looked cleaner, and even my white hand towels looked better than they started out.

The next test for me was getting tough stains out of Miss E’s clothes. We’ve had a few accidents with red pens and markers lately and I have yet to get a certain red pen out of her clothes, so I thought I would give The Honest Company’s stain fighters a try.

Here is her shirt before, it may be hard to see but it is covered in blackberry stains, several red pens marks and some other things that I can’t make out. This is the 2nd red pen disaster I’ve had this week and I haven’t been able to get any of them out.

I started by spraying the Stain Remover and letting it sit for a few minutes. Then I threw it in the washer with an Oxy Boost and detergent. I was going all out on this one.

To my surprise, the blackberry stains were completely gone and the red pen was almost completely removed, except for a few of the more saturated areas. But keep in mind that when I tried my chemical stain removers last week, they didn’t even touch the red pen. It was just as bright as it was before, so this was a HUGE improvement. I think I’ll do the same technique again and hope that it takes it all out.

So the question is, will I be switching my laundry room over to a more eco-friendly place? Yes, definitely. I went into this thinking that nothing could touch my bleach or stain remover sprays and I was proven wrong. I really enjoyed working with these products. The scent is either very fresh or non-existent and my laundry just feels greener! And I feel a little better for helping the environment :)
